One clear photo. One line saying who it is.

Families and carers often make memory books for a relative living with dementia. The format that works is a simple one, and it happens to be the one this book already uses.

Start a bookHow it works

Keep each page simple

  • One photo to a page, with nothing else competing for attention.
  • A caption that names the people and the relationship: "Your daughter Kate and her husband Dave."
  • Short sentences in large type.
  • A plain white page. No patterns behind the words.

Choose photos they will know

Older photos are often recognised more easily than recent ones: the wedding, the first house, the children when they were small. Mix those with clear, recent photos of the people who visit, so faces and names stay together.

A book to read with someone

These books are most useful as something to look at together, with a relative or a carer. Captions give the other person something to say. We're a printing service, not a medical one, and can't promise how any one person will respond; many families simply find it a calm thing to share.

Practical choices

Softcover is lighter and lies flat. Thirty pages is plenty. If it will be handled a lot, hardcover lasts longer. Order a second copy for the family home if visits happen in both places.

Questions

Good to know.

Can several relatives add photos?

Yes. Send the family link and each person adds their own. You can reorder everything and leave out any photo before it prints.

Can captions be written in the first person?

Captions print exactly as you type them, so write them however reads best aloud.

How large is the type?

Captions are set at up to 18 point. Shorter captions are printed larger.
