When is Mother's Day? Dates around the world

Why the UK and Ireland are different

Mothering Sunday is older than the modern Mother's Day. It's the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter Sunday, and was originally the day people returned to their "mother church". Because Easter moves, so does Mothering Sunday: anywhere from early March to early April.

Where the second Sunday of May comes from

The May date began in the United States in the early twentieth century and spread to much of the world, including New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy and Japan.

If your family is in two countries

Celebrate hers. A card that arrives on your Mother's Day, two months after her own, lands oddly. Put her date in your calendar with a reminder three weeks ahead.

Ordering in time

A Mother's Day photo book needs about two weeks: one for the family to add photos, one for printing and delivery. Each country page shows the date to order by.

South Korea marks Parents' Day on 8 May, for both parents together. The United Arab Emirates and much of the Arab world keep 21 March.
